Scalable Subsea Control Systems for Shell

Need & Challenge

Perdido is the world’s deepest spar, and the second-deepest oil and gas production facility. It commenced production in 2010, configured with 31 production wells, eight water injectors, two manifolds and an artificial lift control system with electric submersible pumps (ESPs). The client was initially using a PC based Subsea Communication architecture with a maximum of 4 wells in a subsystem that was a first-generation product.
The Challenge was to provide a fully scalable solution that should be capable of handling the hardware for the entire life of the subsea wells including all new drilled well in the field.
  • Project: Perdido
  • Location: Gulf of Mexico
  • Market(s): Upstream

Solution & Outcome

W-industries provided a fully scalable and customizable system utilizing a Master Control Station (MCS) system that is highly customizable and scalable. The system was set-up to suit any field requirement, and have been used in fields with a single Subsea Control Module (SCM) with one Production Tree to those involving a potential to expand to 96 SCMs with a complex mixture of Production, Water/Gas Injection Trees, associated Manifolds, flow metering and down hole instrumentation & control.
Seamless interface and Integration:
Apart from our MCS Controller we were able to seamlessly interface and Integrate with  HMI Station(s) – Provides flexible, easy to use & navigate and fully customizable operator displays. Includes standard Subsea control functionality, interlock messaging, shutdown sequence display and control, system security, alarm handling, data/alarm history and more  Valve Signature Server(s) / Client – Provides for valve monitoring and pressure and/or flow signature analysis. Dedicated client software provides for graphical displays, user interface and data export features.  Fast Scan Server(s) / Client – Gathers and archives fast-scan data in SQL database. Performs system specific calculations for EU, flow and others functionality.
Completely scalable and customizable system:
Without much of new hardware, the system is being scaled and customized till today and years to come. Most of the field expansion and addition of wells regularly is being done using online software tools, even today.Validation of new additional wells are performed using Automated Test Tools with minimum user intervention. The user evaluates the test results and take appropriate decisions.
